Our Restaurant of the Month
The Laundry – Brixton
A new modern neighbourhood bistro and wine shop from award-winning hospitality entrepreneur Melanie Brown, The Laundry is the latest addition to Coldharbour Lane. Occupying a striking Edwardian building, Walton Lodge, the venue serves a food menu focussing on classical dishes and techniques with understated new world flair applied to the very best British produce from Natoora, Pesky Fish, and The Cornwall Project. Australian Head Chef, Dylan Cashman’s dishes include the likes of pink fir potatoes baked in salt pastry with garlic and rosemary, and herb cream; cured day-boat sea bass, pickled strawberry, pepper, tarragon and sunflower seeds; and Hereford beef tartar, fermented chilli, prawn oil, egg yolk, bonito and triple-cooked beef fat potato chips.
Moreover, The Laundry also offers a selection of 50 wines on the main list, including eight served by the glass, priced from £6.50. The list aims to represent the very best from old and new world regions to guide guests to try new varietals, as well as providing exceptional representation from classic and well-loved makers. Melanie Brown’s first collection of wines, NEW PRESS, three wines created to represent a true expression of New Zealand terroirs and styles will also be available. This first collection of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Rosé and Pinot Noir will launch exclusively at The Laundry, available by the glass and bottle. An additional, ever-changing selection of wines will also be served from The Laundry’s premium private cellar collection, The Cleaner’s Diary.

Flesh & Buns are heading west for their third restaurant, opening up their latest just off High Street Kensington. Taking over what was previously BILL WYMAN'S STICKY FINGERS on Phillimore Gardens, the new site will be their biggest yet and will offer Flesh & Buns’ usual Japanese izakaya and Nikkei-inspired dishes, along with whisky, sake, and beers for the full experience. The food menu is split into several sections including small plates, sashimi, ceviche, maki, poké-don and of course the restaurant’s signature steamed bao buns. So we can expect the likes of:
Korean Fried Rings Sea Salt Tempura Fried Squid
Smoked pork rib doused in tallow chilli honey glaze
Spicy tuna with rocoto chilli and pickled daikon
Ceviche Mixto – tuna, salmon, seabass, sweet potato
Salted caramel chocolate fondant with matcha ice cream
Being inspired by Japanese izakayas, drinking is as much a part of the Flesh & Buns experience as the food. Highlights from the cocktail menu include the Yuzu Margarita (tequila, triple sec, lime juice, yuzu juice, agave syrup), while Japanese whiskies include a single malt from Akashi, a Yamazaki 12 y/o and Nikka from the barrel. A long list of sake includes a custom sake made for Flesh & Buns’ sister restaurant Bone Daddies. Alongside the new Kensington opening, the two existing restaurants, in Covent Garden and Fitzrovia, will also be getting a refresh with updated interiors and menus. www.fleshandbuns.com -

London restaurants opening from Nov2022, into 2023
Maresco 45 Berwick Street, W1F 8SF maresco.co.uk
A follow up to north London heroes Bar Esteban in Crouch End and Escocesa in Stoke Newington, Maresco sees Glaswegian restaurateur Stephen Lironi, head chef Pablo Rodriguez and operations manager Naroa Ortega bring their Iberian-Caledonian fusion to Soho. Expect tapas dishes with a focus on Scottish seafood along the lines of txistorra del mar — sausage made with mackerel and monkfish — fideua with langoustines, Highland venison with cauliflower pil pil and oysters with green gazpacho. There’s space for 48 customers around the ground-floor counter and the dining room downstairs.
Saltie Girl 15 North Audley Street, W1K 6WZ
Said to be the best thing to come out of Boston since New Kids on the Block, Saltie Girl’s lobster rolls and clam chowder are a big hit back in Massachusetts, with founder and New England native Kathy Sidell inspired by sailing trips on the Atlantic with her dad. There’s more to the place than a cutesy backstory, however: oysters, caviar and luxury tinned fish are other specialities, there’s an international wine list, a bar for cocktails and chic surrounds befitting a Mayfair location a couple of minutes from Selfridges

Notto 199 Piccadilly, W1J 9HA
Following the success of Richoux, another classically trained chef is bringing good-value, high-quality cooking to Piccadilly. Phil Howard (of Michelin-starred Elystan Street fame) launched Notto as a pasta-delivery service after lockdown; now the chef is opening his first bricks-and-mortar site by St James’s Church. Executive chef duties fall to pasta guru Louis Korovilas (ex-Locanda Locatelli and Bancone), with cooking on display in a pasta bar and central open kitchen; expect the likes of brown shrimp linguine, pici cacio e pepe, root vegetable bucatini and scallop and prawn ravioli. Some may remember this as Otto, but Howard was forced to change the name after a legal challenge from Otto Tepasse, of the much-loved Otto’s on Gray’s Inn Road. nottopastabar.com

The first UK site for restaurateur Fadi Kattan, Akub brings the flavours of Palestine to a three-floor site centred on an internal courtyard behind Notting Hill Gate. From craft spirits to crockery and cocktail ingredients, as much as possible comes from Palestine, while the cooking features British ingredients in the likes of nigella seed crackers and focaccia to dip into red-lentil moutabal or spread with labneh ahead of arak-cured sea bream, freekeh risotto and vine leaves stuffed with skate, with Dead Sea chocolate cake for pudding. To drink, there are natural and classic wines, beers, arak and other Palestinian spirits .ANNIE HARRISON /DESIGNER , akub-restaurant.com
Bacchanalia 1 Mount Street, W1K 3NA, bacchanalia.co.uk
Bacchanalia is a Graeco-Roman mashup from Richard Caring, pretty much the only British restaurateur who can compete with the global big boys for the West End’s primest properties; with an interior featuring Damien Hirst statues of winged lovers kissing on a unicorn, subtlety may not be on the menu, but an emphasis on Greek food and wine alongside the Italian at least is bringing something new to Mayfair.
Miznon Notting Hill 14 Elgin Crescent, W11 2HX
The Soho sandwich sensation (by way of Tel Aviv, New York and Paris) moves west to Notting Hill with minute steak, cauliflower and chicken livers stuffed into quite possibly the finest pita bead on the planet.miznon.co.uk

Dining Under the Stars at the Newly Opened Soho Place Theatre, London W1. . The first new theatre in the West End in 50 years, this is one place I’ve been excited to hear about and it certainly hasn’t disappointed. Outside its modern and glass-fronted, sparkling and reflecting the London evening lights. Inside, it’s modern and absolutely beautiful – with no expense spared . The restaurant’s main feature is the specially commissioned constellation artwork which moves and twinkles throughout, depicting constellation star signs and colorful galaxies and nebulas.

HOMEBOY, the modern Irish cocktail bar run by Aaron Wall and Ciaran Smith in Islington, is expanding. FESTIVAL NEWS
77th Venice International Film Festival
The 77th annual Venice International Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 2 to 12 September 2020, albeit in a "more restrained format" due the COVID-19 pandemic. Australian actress Cate Blanchett has been appointed as the President of the Jury. The Ties, directed by Daniele Luchetti, was selected as the opening film, the first Italian film in 11 years to open the festival.
The 77th Venice International Film Festival is organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera. It will take place at Venice Lido from 2 - 12 September 2020. The Festival is officially recognised by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Association).
The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The Festival also organises retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.
The Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido di Venezia is the main headquarters for the Venice International Film Festival. Built in record time in the Modernist style of the time, it was inaugurated on August 10th 1937 for the fifth edition of the Festival. Compared to the rhetorical monumentality of the nearby Casino building, the Palazzo del Cinema, which features a Hall and a 1032-seat screening theatre, is a synthesis of Rationalist models. What remains today of the original building are the two rounded sides and the lateral façades.
Cannes Film Festival 2021 highlights: Sun, stars and saliva
The Cannes Film Festival is drawing to a close, and despite the pandemic it managed to gather a larger number film stars in the sunshine for the obligatory photo opportunities.
This distinctive line-up of director Wes Anderson and actors Timothee Chalamet, Tilda Swinton and Bill Murray for their film The French Dispatch proved irresistible as a meme.
Jessica Shortall described the line-up as "Tiktok-LinkedIn-Instagram-Twitter", while Philip Bump dubbed them "Z, X, Millennial, Boomer".
Sara Wallace Goodman spoke for many of us when she described the stars' fashions as: "Zoom presentation attire, remembering how I dressed before Zoom, imagining how I'll dress after Zoom, how I'll actually dress after Zoom."
That picture became one of the viral moments from the prestigious festival, but there were plenty of other talking points.
'We're experts in saliva'
The Covid safety procedures included saliva tests for those outside the EU's Covid tracking system.
In other words, attendees had to dispense with any delusions of glamour and spit into a pot.
The Wrap's Ben Croll wrote that booking a test was "painless enough", but "the process of generating enough saliva, however, requires a bit more finesse" - describing being handed a vial to fill, which was checked for quality and quantity.
The Guardian's Xan Brooks said a medic sternly told him: "Only the liquid is good. The froth doesn't count."
Vulture's Nate Jones added that the French event had "become an odyssey of spit", while Variety's Ramin Setoodeh described "audible sighs of frustration among those waiting in line when they realised just how much saliva the lab needed from them".
Hollywood actor Matt Damon and Call My Agent's Camille Cottin added some star wattage for Stillwater, which got a five-minute standing ovation.
Variety's executive editor Ramin Setoodeh said Damon was brought to tears by the applause. He plays an American oil rig roughneck who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, who is in prison for a murder she says she did not commit.
IndieWire's Anne Thompson said Todd McCarthy's film got "solid" early reviews and that the director "effectively draws the audience into this shut-down man's dawning awareness of an emotional life beyond the confines of Oklahoma oilfields".
Empire's Ian Freer said the film "mashes up quest-for-justice, father-daughter dramatics, fortysomething romance and mid-life introspection for a refreshingly adult drama".
The Spectator's Stephen Arnell said this year's festival was "a bumper event with a wealth of backlogged movies on offer for film-starved cineastes", with Val - a documentary chronicling the highs, lows and cancer battle of US actor Kilmer - as his top pick.
He also highlighted the musical Annette, which opened the festival, but suggested it would be "something of a Marmite experience for cinema-goers".
It stars Adam Driver as edgy comedian Henry, married to renowned soprano Ann (Marion Cotillard), with a newborn daughter Annette who is actually a puppet with strange abilities.
Variety's Richard Lawson called the film "daring and garish", but Screen Daily's Jonathan Romney said it was "an audacious folly that comes across as grandiose and joyless".
Tatler's Danielle Lawler also recommended Annette along with The French Dispatch, which she called an "ensemble of epic proportions" with a cast that also includes Willem Dafoe, Frances McDormand and Saoirse Ronan.
She called the film, which is based on a collection of short stories originally published in The French Dispatch magazine, "a dreamy blockbuster for these times".
Flag Day, directed by Sean Penn and starring the actor alongside his daughter Dylan and son Hopper, was also highlighted. It is based on a young woman's relationship with her father, who she discovers led a double life as a conman.
The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney said it "succumbs to Penn's worst indulgences, loading up on big actor-ish explosions of volatility rather than trying to get to the lost soul of a desperate man and the yearning of a daughter".
But Deadline's Pete Hammond added that it would be "remembered as a dazzling showcase for the acting talents of his daughter".
Sharon Stone steals the show
Regardless of what is happening on screen, there will always be more interest in what's happening on the red carpet.
Actress Sharon Stone wore a Dolce & Gabbana dress bedecked in flowers for the screening of The Story of My Wife, about a sea captain who makes a bet in a cafe with a friend that he will marry the first woman who walks in.
Stone's co-star Lea Seydoux was unable to attend because she contracted Covid, so Stone, a veteran of the Cannes red carpet, having attended for Basic Instinct in 1992, made the most of the limelight. She was variously described as stunning, dazzling and stealing the show in the most beautiful dress at Cannes.
FOOD FAIRS UK 2021
7-11July & 14-18July 2021 Taste of London | Regents Park, NW1 4NR
We came, we ate, we conquered. Week one of Taste of London was nothing short of epic.
Agreed by everyone who joined in Regent’s Park for the best celebration of food and drink in the capital.
Taste of London transforms Regent’s Park into the ultimate foodie paradise for five days per week for 2 weeks.
A delicious medley of dining, drinking, and live entertainment, Taste has been called the ‘world’s greatest restaurant festival’ and is a must-visit for fans of all things gourmet. Indulge in signature dishes from some of the capital’s top-rated restaurants, watch live demos by the hottest chefs in town, and sample everything from the finest whiskies to the most unique ingredients as you browse and buy from the 200-plus market producers.
After a year of pining for a taste of London again…
…it’s back, this time for ten days of flavour-packed fun.
As usual it’s all happening in Regent’s Park, only this time over two consecutive weekends, from the 7th – 11th July, and 14th – 18th of July. Ticket holders will be invited to stroll around the (hopefully) sun-drenched surrounds and feast on food from some of London’s finest restaurants, all of which have designed small plates on sale for around £5 each (so not only will you be able to try more than a few, but it won’t break the bank either).
Taste of London 2021 – what can you expect?
Gizzi Erskine and Professor Green will be there with lockdown food venture Giz ‘n’ Green, the Delevingne sisters will make their festival debut with premium prosecco Della Vite, and DJ legend Fat Tony will be bringing the vibes.
It’s fair to say that nabbing a table at London’s best restaurants has been tough this summer, but at Taste you’ll find a diverse line-up.
You’ll have the chance to tuck into Napoli Gang’s exclusive chocorgasmo pizza, (a dessert slice with chocolate hazelnut spread!), alongside that iconic lemon meringue pie. Week one sees Indo Chinese restaurant Fatt Pundit’s crispy sticky bites, a dish exclusive to Taste, and Sonora Taqueria’s daily special will be short rib and beef cheek torta – yum!
Dishes available in week two include Hoppers’ braised lamb shoulder roti, or grab Santo Remedio’s Baja-style fish taco, with beer-battered fish, jalapeño mayo, pico de gallo and spicy jalapeño mayo.
For kitchen inspo, head to the Chop It Like It’s Hot: Taste Kitchen. Mandy Yin, owner of Malaysian restaurant Sambal Shiok will also be making an appearance alongside the winner of Channel 4’s “Crazy Delicious” Joseph-Benjamin Cumberbatch, followed by Big Zuu of Big Zuu’s Big Eats.
The Fire Pit will see Arros QD cooking Cornish queen scallop paella over the open fire. Sabrina Gidda, executive chef at female members club The AllBright Mayfair, and Singaporean chef Elizabeth Haigh will also take a turn, dishing out samples to hungry onlookers.
Bar Douro, Imad’s Syrian Kitchen, Flesh and Buns, Burger & Lobster, Angelina, Taka, Santo Remedio, Egg Run, Napoli Gang Hoppers, Arros QD and more…
With so much more besides – this is one festival you won’t want to miss.
NOTE: Taste of London 2021 is taking place in Regent’s Park between the 7th and 11th of July and the 14th and 18th. Tickets are now on sale

Wing Fest London AT London Stadium Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, E20 2ST
A celebration of the mighty chicken wing and is now the world’s biggest chicken wing festival.
Every year the event showcases the best chicken wings the UK has to offer, with thousands of lucky ticket holders and a judging panel deciding who really does do the best wings!
IN the 2021 edition
120,000 wings will be served by 35 different street food traders, restaurants and BBQ teams.
This wing-centric two-day festival will turn the London Stadium into a poultry eating, music thumping, axe throwing, beer and bourbon drinking weekend of epic proportion.
Vote for your favourite wings on the day via the Wing Fest website.
Who really does the best wings?
Europe’s biggest chicken wing show-down returns to London to provide the answer to that burning question - who really does the best wings? On the 24th and 25th of July at London Stadium, in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, competitors from across the UK will work their culinary magic in a bid to be crowned the King or Queen of the Wing.
Wing Fest will see 35 contestants battle it out in two fiercely contested categories:
Best Buffalo Wing
Described in the North American dictionary, from where this mighty morsel hales, as "Deep-fried wings coated in a spicy sauce." Of course to those in the know, this description simply doesn’t do this wonderful creation justice and the search for the best out there is fiercely contested across the world.
Best Wild Wing
This category is looking to explore and demonstrate the many exciting ways a chicken wing can be prepared and served in the broadest sense possible. In this category anything goes. Any flavour, any technique, any taste. Basically the rule is, there are no rules.
The culinary warriors battling it out in 2021 are a mixture of street food vendors, pop up legends, and restaurants from all over the UK.
All wings are £1 and will be sold in individual joints (£1 = 1 drum or £1 = 1 flat) to allow voters to try as many wings as possible from each of the contestants.
For the greediest of wing eaters among you, the incredibly popular Frank’s RedHot Wing Eating Competition will again be taking place on both event days.
The deadly GET HEATED Lava Wing Challenge, which is guaranteed to cause carnage, will also be held on both event days this year.
Sign up for both competitions will be on the day at the main stage. Keep an ear out for the announcements.
We'll have charismatic BBQ chefs ruling the roost on the Chicken Shed stage. Here you can expect tantalising cooking demonstrations, BBQ tips, fun shows and DJs later in the day!
Returning for 2021 will be fairground attractions, roaming musicians, and free axe throwing!
There will be live blues music, bourbon master classes and street entertainment through out both event days, as well as DJs playing summer party vibe tunes into the night.

MEATOPIA TOBACCO DOCK (near Shadwell (DLR/OVERGROUND) E1 )
31AUG-3SEP2023
Meatopia takes place each year at the hallowed London location of Tobacco Dock, Shadwell. Built in the early 19th Century as a hub for precious cargo arriving into London from the New World via the river that runs alongside it, the timber frame and brick vaults of Tobacco Dock have witnessed everything from Victorian trade deals and tiger attacks to music festivals and, of course, some of the world’s best live-fire chefs arriving to cook at Meatopia. Today it has a reputation as one of the ultimate event venues in London.
EAT 🔪
At Meatopia 2022, over 70 of the world’s best live-fire chefs cooked exclusive dishes over the course of three days, using nothing but sustainable wood and charcoal and responsibly-sourced, quality ingredients — that means meat, fish and veg. Our alumni of chefs include Francis Mallmann, Niklas Ekstedt, Amninder Sandhu, Yotam Ottolenghi, Dave Pynt, Aaron Franklin, Fergus Henderson, Bryan Furman, and Lennox Hastie.
DRINK 🍻
All that smokey, flavour-filled food is thirsty work. Luckily for you, Meatopia has a mind-boggling array of quenching beverages on offer. From meeting the craft brewers in the TAPtopia hall to sinking a few sundowners on the dock, all manner of spirits, cocktails and liquid delights are on offer.
FIRE 🔥
The finest, most sustainably sourced wood and charcoal is the star of the show at Meatopia, so gather around the fire and let your inner cave-person be mesmerised by it. From simple grills to imposing smokers and roaring fire-pits, every method of fire cooking imaginable is on show at Meatopia, and at the helm of the flames are some of the world’s most skilled chefs.
MUSIC 🎺
Live musicians, roaming brass bands, DJs and soulful singers can be found in every corner of the festival, and a crowd to go with them. We’ve had everyone from infamous party-starters New York Brass Band to legendary last-man-standing Bez of the Happy Mondays play to our punters, keeping the good vibes going through day and night.
MEATOPIA IS A WEEKEND-LONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH FOOD, DRINK, FIRE AND MUSIC. THE ULTIMATE BACCHANALIAN PARTY
